Why
We Have Small Home Groups
1. God created
the small group. The first humans were a small group - the family. It
is in a family environment that human beings can most effectively mature
emotionally and spiritually.
2. Jesus
practiced it. He ministered to the multitude but he lived his ministry
in a small group and trained his disciples in that environment.
3. The Spirit
inspired it. The first Christians not only worshiped together at the
temple but met together in small groups in their homes (Acts 2:46). The
churches that Paul established met in homes and this was the pattern up
until the 4th century when the first church buildings appeared.
4. It is the most
effective way to build Christian community. A small group setting
helps us to get to know one another, to care and support one another, to
pray for one another and to help each other grow in the grace and
knowledge of Jesus Christ with one another. It provides a place where new
Christians can be discipled and taught.
5. It is an
environment for leadership development. God has given all of us gifts
of the Spirit to use to serve others. The small group setting allows for
gift discovery and development in a non-intimidating and loving
environment. It also helps keep the focus of leadership in proper
perspective: to serve others in the family of God and in our community,
not for self-exultation or personal gain.
